I was "Oh Dean"-ing quite a bit myself, I have to admit. I wondered if I'd gone too far, but rather than making him OOC, I think I was playing more with the unreliable narrator. He is looking back at childhood memories, after all, no matter how visceral they are. But it really struck me that all of Sam's resentment of Dean's relationship with their father just might bounce back on them if Mary was the one who survived.
