And yes, the "by the time I'm thirty" bit is horribly heavy-handed dramatic irony, but I also think it's important to remember that they don't have any notion of their Horrible Doom - they may see the clouds gathering, but have no idea what the storm will bring, not even Remus, who thinks he's already jaded.
