A Remix Of From Pegasus, With Love by Soleta
Ronon Dex gets copied on pretty much every email the team sends. It doesn't matter who they're sending it to, or why – if it's going out from the team, it goes out from the whole team, and that's that. When he joined on, he didn't exactly get told he was joining a force more tightly bonded than the fabled Myrevan Guard, but there are times when words are unnecessary – and Ronon supposes those times come more often than most people suspect. The Lanteans didn't have to tell him what he was getting when he agreed to join. He knew.
But there are plenty of things that need explaining, as far as he's concerned, that if he were asking anyone but Sheppard and Rodney about he'd feel like he were violating some unspoken social order like the one that his mother, mindful of what should have been his lot in life, brought him up to respect. Sheppard and Rodney, though, he has no problems with, as Rodney put it, "pestering us with questions even though I'm pretty sure Sheppard is supposed to be flying this thing and I really have to concentrate on this equation – but oh, fine, don't give me that look, what is it?"
So he asks what it means when Rodney crows in an email to the team about how he's crashed Kavanagh's bank account and made it so that his credit rating is so low he won't be able to buy a Vespa.
"What's a credit rating?" Ronon says around a mouthful of popcorn, figuring that nobody was really paying attention to the metal man protecting the small boy on the television, even if he was a governator. "And is a Vespa really such a desirable object? In Sateda we had a gun called a vespa, but it only shot air. I think it was named for the sound the air made going out of the gun."
"A Vespa is a particular kind of motorized vehicle with two wheels," Rodney says, reaching across John's lap to the bowl of popcorn Ronon is holding. "A credit rating is what enables a person to buy goods without having cash with them."
"Like the card John gave me when we went to Earth the last time," Teyla chimes in. "The marketplaces on earth were very willing to accept the credit card. John's credit rating must be very good."
"Not anymore," John mutters, and turns up the volume on the television just a little.
"So did Kavanagh want a Vespa that much?" Ronon asks. "Aren't the two-wheeled vehicles less efficient?" He remembers the three-wheeler his father bought for him when he was six, riding it as fast as he could and laughing when he outpaced his sister on her stubby toddler legs. His father could outrun him on that, though, so two wheels should work even worse, even if it had a motor.
"Not all of them, buddy. Next time we get some leave, remind me to take you for a ride on a Harley. I think you'll find it pretty damn efficient."
"Oh, Jesus," Rodney says, "you're going to get him killed and then SGC will have more paperwork for us than we can possibly deal with."
"This Harley is dangerous?" Ronon asks. "Dangerous like Jeopardy, or actually dangerous?"
"Actually dangerous," Rodney snaps. "In the hospitals they call people who ride motorcycles… well, I don't remember exactly what, because I never rode one. But something to do with organ donation, I think." He takes another handful of popcorn.
"Flying spaceships is dangerous too," John points out. "Harleys are almost as fun."
"Oh, you would say that," Rodney says, rolling his eyes, but it's less like an argument and more fond, like something his mother would say to his father when his father was insisting on doing something she thought she ought to disagree with. Ronon knows it's not exactly like that – he's not stupid – but he knows these people, knows who they are and where he fits in, and if it's not a family like he had before, before Sateda was gone and everything was different, then it's something very similar.
"Riding a Harley doesn't require the ATA gene," Ronon says, not really a question – just to be sure.
"Nope, just gas and the open road," John answers cheerfully, reaching for some more popcorn. The movie is coming to a close, and he frowns at the screen. "What's next up?"
"Live And Let Die," Teyla says, holding up the DVD case.
"Why are we not starting them from the beginning of the Bond films?" Rodney complains. "Seems wrong, somehow."
"Then they'll have to watch the one with Lazenby," John says.
"We can totally skip that!" Rodney says. "That one was barely a Bond film."
"Are these Bond films like what was on that computer you gave me?" Ronon asks. "Because if they are – "
"No," Rodney says hastily, "these are about a spy whose name is Bond. Lots of explosions. You'll love it."
"I actually quite enjoyed those other Bond films, Rodney." Teyla says, grinning at Ronon. Rodney's uncomfortable, they can see, and his ears are turning red.
"Me too, McKay," Ronon agrees. "We should watch those."
"Rodney," John begins.
"Those were not Bond films and I thought I had wiped the computer so can we please not discuss them and just watch this movie," Rodney says in one breath, snatching the DVD case from Teyla's hands and very studiously not looking at anyone.
The new movie begins, and as a song which he's sure he's heard Sheppard hum before starts playing, he grins at Teyla. Rodney is staring so hard at the television screen Ronon finds himself wondering what would happen if Rodney had the same powers as the governator from the last movie, and John is looking thoughtfully down at his hands.
"So why do you guys like this movie so much?" Ronon asks, wondering when the popcorn is going to run out, and then Rodney and John are arguing again and Teyla is smiling over at him. Ronon may not understand everything they say, but he understands them.

Date: 2007-04-24 07:45 pm (UTC)aw, I love them so much. I love the way you speculate on what might have happened next without basically reusing the original story, and it feels so right.
Ronon is so deliberately obtuse. :D thank you so much for this, I couldn't have asked for better. :D
